Black History Month 2024

Posted on Posted in Key Reminder, Latest News, News

We celebrated BHM across school in October. We celebrated by making a stand showing that we wear red to ‘show racism the red card!’ Wear Red Day – Show Racism the Red Card

In Reception

We have talked about racism in the past and how achievements of black people were not celebrated. We have learnt about Mae Jemison, Marcus Rashford and Alma Thomas and have our own, collaborative version of her art.

In Year 1

During Black History week the children in Year 1 looked at Marcus Rashford a famous football player and Harriet Tubman an inspirational woman who helped save hundreds of slaves. The children really enjoyed learning about how these inspiring people made a difference to the world.

In Year 2 we looked into Mary Seacole. We explored how times were different but also why and how she helped others and became a well-known and respected person. The children then created their own fact files about her.

In Year 3 we looked at musicians and an artist named Jean-Michel Basquiat, the children then created their own pieces of artwork inspired by his iconic work, that featured themselves, positive words and a crown.

Year 4

For Black History month we focused on Matthew Henson as it is linked to our book and explorer’s topic. The children all created fact files  Kingfishers – Matthew Henson Factfiles

In Year 6

We looked at heroes of black history and drew a thumbnail sketch to symbolise the inspiration and values that we can gain from the differences they have made to history
